When someone speaks quickly, uses an unfamiliar expression or there is background noise, missing part of the conversation is normal. Instead of only saying no entiendo, explain exactly what you need.
1. Ask them to repeat
«Perdona, ¿puedes repetirlo?» is clear and polite. Formally, use «Perdone, ¿podría repetirlo?»
2. Ask them to slow down
«¿Puedes hablar un poco más despacio, por favor?» The words un poco make the request softer.
3. When you only missed one part
«He entendido casi todo, pero no la última parte» or «¿Qué has dicho después de “mañana”?»
4. Ask about a word
«¿Qué significa “turno”?», «¿Qué quiere decir esa palabra?» or «¿Cómo se dice de otra manera?»
5. Check what you understood
«Entonces, ¿tengo que volver el lunes?» or «Si he entendido bien, cerráis a las ocho, ¿no?»
6. Gain a few seconds
«A ver si lo he entendido…», «Un momento…» and «Déjame pensar» are normal conversation tools.
Activity: an appointment has changed
Receptionist: La doctora no puede atenderte a las cinco. Te cambiamos la cita al jueves a primera hora.
- Ask them to repeat the new date.
- Ask what a primera hora means.
- Confirm the date and time in your own words.
Possible answer: «Perdona, ¿puedes repetir el día? ¿Qué quiere decir “a primera hora”? Entonces, si he entendido bien, tengo que venir el jueves por la mañana, ¿no?»
Your challenge
